8 Brake Warning Signals That Say “Get Checked Now”

When Your Brakes Are Trying to Tell You Something...

Driving safely means knowing not just how to use your vehicle, but also how it’s communicating with you. Brakes are one of the most critical safety systems on your car. Ignoring warning signs can lead to costly repairs — or worse. At Kiama Auto Services, serving drivers in Kiama and surrounds, we believe an informed driver is a safer driver. Below are the key brake warning signs all drivers should be aware of, what causes them, and when to bring your vehicle in for professional inspection or service.

When Your Brakes Are Trying to Tell You Something...

What Your Brakes Might Be Telling You...

Every warning sign below hints at a different kind of issue. Some are urgent; some allow for planned repairs. If you notice any of them, it’s better not to wait.

1. Unusual noises when braking
A squealing, screeching or grinding sound often means that the friction material (brake pads) is worn down. Newer vehicles may have wear indicators that produce high-pitched noise when the pads reach a minimal thickness. Grinding typically means metal-on-metal contact — the pads are badly worn and possibly damaging rotors.

2. Dashboard warning lights
Modern cars have sensors and dashboard lights (e.g. ABS, brake warning light, or general fault indicators). If a light related to the braking system comes on, it’s a sign you should stop driving normally and have the brakes checked. These lights could mean low brake fluid, a fault in the ABS module, or worn pads.

3. Soft, spongy or sinking brake pedal
When the pedal feels soft or goes further down than usual (or sinks slowly), it often means air or moisture in the brake fluid, or worn or leaky components (callipers, master cylinder or hoses). This reduces braking effectiveness and requires attention immediately.

4. Car pulls to one side on braking
If your vehicle drifts or pulls to one side when braking, it could be uneven wear of pads or discs, or an issue with the brake lines or hoses, or even tyres/suspension. This affects control and safety.

5. Vibration or pulsation through the brake pedal or steering wheel
Warpage of brake rotors/discs, or uneven surfaces on drums or rotors, often cause vibration or pulsation. If you feel shuddering when braking from speed, have the braking surfaces inspected.

6. Increased stopping distance
If your car feels like it takes longer to stop than it used to, or the brakes seem “sluggish,” it could be due to worn pads, poor quality brake fluid, glazing on brake surfaces, or even minor leaks. Delaying repairs increases risk.

7. Burning smell or smoke
A sharp burning odour during or after a heavy braking event indicates excessive heat — maybe worn pads, stuck callipers, dragging brakes, or a brake hose stuck in partially engaged position. Also kind of smell could mean contaminated or old brake fluid.

8. Leaking fluid
Fluid under the car near each wheel or near the master cylinder is serious. Brake systems work under hydraulic pressure — loss of fluid means loss of stopping power. This needs immediate service.

What Causes These Signs?

  • Worn brake pads, discs or drums are the most common cause of squealing, grinding, vibration
  • Degraded or contaminated brake fluid (absorbs moisture) causes softness, sponginess, corrosion, reduced braking performance
  • Damaged or collapsing hoses/lines allow leaks or introduce air
  • Warped rotors/discs due to overheating or uneven wear
  • Malfunctioning callipers or hardware (pins, slides) sticking and causing uneven braking or dragging

What to do if you notice;

Dashboard warning light comes on
Bring in right away. Let an expert inspect all components.

Grinding noise or metal contact sound
Avoid driving long distances. Replace pads/discs promptly.

Soft pedal, leaking fluid
Do not delay — the braking system could be compromised.

Pulling or vibration
Book a brake & clutch service, including checking rotors, drums, pads and alignment.

Unusual smell after hard braking
Allow brakes to cool; check for sticking callipers; flush fluid if overheated.
